WASTE 2 DUST

24 hour food waste recycling machines

Frequently Asked Questions - Household

What is the size of the machine?

400mm x 400mm x 810mm. The machine is made from durable stainless steel. The finish is either matt or gloss.

What power connection is required?

A standard 230V plug in South Africa. The machine is designed for any voltage and will be customised for your country.

What is the maximum power demand of the machine?

The rated maximum power demand is 100W. In working cycle the machine will draw on average of 50W, while in power saving mode this is reduced to 15W. This rating is dependent on the load in the macine bin.

How does the process work?

Composting is a natural process, where the speed is determined by the environment and the microbes. We have made a machine that optimises the environment for this process. The machine turns the waste frequently to ensure optimal microbial activity. The temperature is controlled to stimulate the growth rate of the microbes. This all helps to compost certain food waste within 24 hours.

What will compost in 24 hours?

We have found that the more processed a food is, the quicker the composting process will be. Most vegetable and fruit peels will take longer than 24-hours to compost. This is due to the protective nature of a peel. Fruit pips, seeds and nuts will not compost. Flowers and small stems do compost, but tree and shrub branches will take a long time.

What maintenance does the machine require?

The occasional wipe down on the outside for estetic purposes. Removal of excess compost, and scraping the sides of the bin, to remove some of the hardened compost. Do not clean the machine with any cleaning chemicals, as this could potentially kill the microbes.

What can't I throw in the machine?

Chemicals. This will kill the microbes. Glass and metal will not compost.

What will take longer to compost?

Bones (months), peels (days), fruit pips (months), nuts (months),

What packaging will the machine compost?

Most paper packaging will breakdown into compost. Caution needs to be taken with a plastic coated paper, as some plastics don't compost. This plastics should be seperated from the compost and recycled.

"Biodegradable" packaging does compost. The composting time depends on the density and thickness of the material. Please take caution when adding the packaging.

My Compost is too wet. What do I do?

You can add torn strips of uncoated paper (newspaper, plain paper, egg trays, etc..). This will absorb the moisture, and add carbon to your compost.

My compost is very dry. What do I do?

Add some liquids (water, coffee, tea, etc..) to the process. This will moisten the compost. We suggest not more than 100ml at a time, with 2 hour intervals.

Oops, I added some chemicals. What now?

  • Let the machine run for 1 day, to see if it still composts food waste. Cooked starches is a great tester.
  • If the food waste is gone, then the microbes is still alive. Please don't add any chemicals again.
  • If it is still there, then contact us for a new starter batch.
  • Remove all the compost and food waste from your bin. Scrape off all the hardened compost. Wipe down the inside with a wet cloth and run the machine with no contents for 24 hours. This will hopefully evaporate all the chemicals. Please do not use any chemicals to clean the bin.
  • Add the new starter batch.

Can I get a booster pack for my machine?

Yes, please contact our sales team.
